Camiguin

What is there to see?

On the ferry to Camiguin you will often encounter dolphins, so keep your eyes out!

Take a short boat ride to White Island. It is a sand-bar in the sea and true paradise.

You can even hire a Kayak

Visit the 70m high Katibawasan Falls!

The Ardent Hot Springs are really warm (not surprising since the volcano last erupted in 1951!)  and well worth a visit.

Visit the sunken graveyard. A large cross is now erected where the graveyard sunk following seismic activity. This area is very picturesque at sunset.

Where do I stay?

There are a number of beach resorts you can stay at. All are very reasonably priced. The book 'Philippines Travel Guide' by Jens Peters has a comprehensive listing. We stayed at Paras Beach Resort and this was very pleasant.

How do I get there?

You reach Camigiun by boat. You can get there from Bohol, Cebu and Mindanao. Most people travelling from Manila will fly to Cagayan de Oro (where you can stay a day to enjoy the white water rafting) and then catch the ferry from Balingoan in Mindanao to Camiguin.

How long shall I stay?

A couple of full days is sufficient to get a good feel for the island and take in the key sights. If you want to enjoy the beaches then stay for longer!

Tips and Comments

Check your travel insurance and foreign office to determine whether you are insured in Mindanao. Due to localised terrorism and kidnaps in Western Mindanao the whole of Mindanao is often tainted with the same brush. You will find Cagayan de Oro and Camiguin perfectly safe (in my opinion, but do check your nations advice at the time of travel).

As Camiguin is slightly off the beaten track you can expect excellent deals on accomodation and food! Camiguin is truely unspoilt!
