Corregidor Island

What is there to see?

Corregidor Island is a not-to-be-missed day tour when in Manila. You travel by a modern boat to Corregidor Island, situated strategically in Manila Bay. On Corregidor you are met by tram-style buses and a tour guide. You are taken on a whistle-stop tour around the island. You will see the big World War II guns, the bombed barracks including the mile-long barracks, the war museums and memorials and then take a tour in the huge Malinta tunnel complex. A wonderful and thought-provoking trip.

A huge gun with a bomb crater in the foreground can be seen below.

Th mile-long barracksare an amazing sight!

Visit the well maintained memorials.

The lighthouse.......

The Pacific War Memorial and museum.

Venture into the Malinta Tunnel....

......and experience the light and sound show, which explains the history.

Where do I stay?

Most people just go for the day trip. If you desire, you may stay overnight in the Corregidor Inn at a very affordable rate.

How do I get there?

You get to Corregidor by boat (unless you have a private helicopter or plane!). The boat is operated by Sun Cruises and leaves from the Ferry Terminal by Harbour Square and very close to the CCP Complex (Cultural Center of the Philippines), which all taxi drivers should know. You can buy your ticket in advance from the terminal or take your chances on the day (usually not a problem just turning up). The day tour costs 2000 peso inclusive of lunch and is a good deal! You can see the webpage at www.corregidorphilippines.com and email bookings to suncruises@magsaysay.com.ph

How long shall I stay?

The day tour allows you to see everything in a rush and this is sufficient for most people! Staying overnight will afford you the opportunity to explore the island yourself. Take a walk around and you really see the extent of military bunkers, gun-posts and buildings on the island. If you are lucky then maybe you will even get a more extensive tour in some of the branches of Malinta Tunnel. In the evening and night you really have the island to yourself as nobody permanently lives there now! So stay overnight if you have the time, but if you want to see lots of things in a limited holiday then just go for the day.

Tips and Comments

Whilst on the tour keep an eye out for the monkeys and birds! These are an added bonus!

Take a sun hat!
