Vigan

What is there to see?

In Vigan many of the old Spanish houses are still standing on Mena Crisologo Street. The scene has not changed much since the 17th Century.  You can wonder around, take photos, buy antiques and have something to eat and drink.

The Calesas (horse-drawn carriage) will take you around town. This is a good way to make sure you see all the sights.

More old Spanish houses - there are over 180!

See the Cathedral of St Paul, which was built in 1641.

The Bantay Bell Tower is where the Filipino movie 'Panday' was shot.

Visit or stay at the Villa Angela Heritage House. This 1850's house is full of antiques and is where Tom Cruise stayed whilst filming  'Born on the 4th of July'.

In Vigan you can see the pottery workshop - maybe even have a go yourself!

Vigan also has a zoo called Baluarte Zoo. You will see everything from butterflys to tigers. Both kids and adults will have a great time!

Here is a cute little animal in the zoo! They come big and small!

Where do I stay?

There are numerous options for accomodation in Vigan. Prices are very reasonable, typically around 2500 peso for good accomodations. Cheaper accomodation is available. The Villa Angela Heritage Hotel offers a good antique feel, but there are numerous quality options. The book 'Philippines Travel Guide' by Jens Peters offers many options.

How do I get there?

The best way to get to Vigan is by bus from Manila (about 9 hours). Why not go to San Fernando, La Union and enjoy the San Juan Surf Beach first. You can then get bus to Vigan which takes 2-3 hours. You should be able to find out details on buses on the internet or simply ask a local as to where the bus station is located.

How long shall I stay?

Two days or overnight (if you arrive early) is sufficient to see most of the sights.
